Things to Consider before Choosing A Hairdresser For Curly Hair

Decisions, decisions…

Whether you’re rocking a TWA or are sporting a long curly mane, our locks are important to us.  Many naturalistas maintain their hair themselves rather than going to a salon, either from bad experience or because they are unsure if the stylist will understand their curly needs.  Luckily, here in the UK we have evolved somewhat and there are now many hairdressers that specialise in caring for natural hair.  Of course, there are some things to consider before you choose a hairdresser for curly hair.  Read on to learn more.

First things first, do your homework!  The internet is your friend in this instance and there is a plethora of online reviews you can check out before choosing an afro hair salon.  Decide what you want done first, whether it is a hair cut/trim, a silk press or extensions and have a look for the best salon for your needs.

You will also want to consider whether you need a curl specialist or a regular stylist.  Some of us with afro and curly textured hair are happy to have their hair straightened and/or cut by a mainstream stylist.  If your hair needs some tender loving care though due to damage or the like, you may want to visit a specialist hairdresser for curly hair instead.

The next thing you will want to bear in mind is the natural texture of your hair.  For those of you with type 3 hair, your hair thrives in its long state.  When getting a curly hair cut you may want to stay away from incorporating bangs as this looks best with straight or fine hair.  For those of you with both type 3 or type 4 hair, your hair should be cut in layers for definition rather than a blunt cut.

When choosing a new hairdresser for curly or afro hair, you also need to think about style maintenance.  If you are going for an edgy curly hair cut or a weave for instance, you need to consider whether or not you will be able to maintain your new look in between salon visits.  Chile’, we’re not all blessed with those hair maintenance hands!  Be honest with yourself.
